Plaza de Castilla, located at the north end of the Paseo De La Castellana, with the Puerta de Europa Towers, 114m high with 26 floors. In the foreground, a monument to José Calvo Sotelo. He was one of the most important right-wing Spanish politicians in the 1930’s. With his murder, a military uprising started, which was the start of the Spanish Civil War. Also, the Caja Madrid Obelisk, 92m high is the brown cylindrical metal shaft resting on 3 legs. This was built to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Caja Madrid & was opened in 2009, some 7 years after the anniversary. Caja Madrid is now known as Bankia after merging with six other savings banks in 2010.
