We walked up to the monastery from a nearby village which was a nice walk. Once we arrived there was a service? or informational talk? from a priest. No English information and our Spanish wasn't really good enough to follow so we weren't entirely sure. We returned the next day and there was a mass. So after two visits we didn't even get to see the cross. Probably bad timing on our part but no idea.
It's a great location for such an important relic. You get to see closely and even touch the left part of the Jesus's cross which is held in this monastery. Highly recommend if you are interested in theology or history.
Beautiful and well kept, we arrived right in time for a explanation and exhibition of the large Cross relic, at 5 pm on a Monday.
The Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana is located near Potes in Cantabria, Spain, significantly on the edge of the Picos Europe mountains. Views from the monastery offers fantastic vistas of the mountains. The monastery was founded prior to the 6th century. According to tradition, the monastery venerates that largest piece of the Lignum Crucis. Brought to the monastery by Saint Turibus of Astorga. The monster is fully geared up for visitors and tourists including masses for those interested.
