This monument stands in tribute to King Carlos III of Spain, who rule from 1759–1788. His contribution was to champion the concept of enlightened absolutism and in doing so, promoted science, university research, facilitating trade and commerce, and modernising agriculture as well as curbing the power of Catholic Church. This statue is located in the touristy Puerta del Sol, where tourists love to get their selfies taken with various landmarks of the city, but apparently not with this monument. This statue is an equestrian statue and looks standard for this kind of monument. It takes pride of place in the centre of the square and looks good at night with the Tio Pepe sign behind lit up.

When visiting Puerto del Sol, you will find three monuments worth seeing, including the Equestrian statue of Carlos III, situated in the centre of the square and facing south. This bronze statue is based upon a similar but smaller original found at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and shows Carlos III, in stately attire, with a scroll in his right hand. He appears to be monitoring activity in the distance. The figure stands upon a pedestal, fronted by an inscribed Shield of Carlos III. This is a quality tribute to Carlos III and quick find at Puerta Del Sol for those who enjoy viewing monuments during your travels. Additional finds here include the classical style figure of Mariblanca on the western end of Puerta Del Sol as well as the enjoyable and important El Oso y El Madroño (the bear and the strawberry tree) figure at the opposite end of the square.
