We traveled by car to the place. It is not far from Barcelona and easy to get there. You have to pay for the train to take you on the top the rest is for free. You will need up to 3 hours for a good hike. The place it is worth visiting.
The view is simply stunning. Then the abbey itself is a wonder. With so many nooks to explore and trails to hike, one can easily spend an entire day here.
Well worth the visit to Montserrat! Make sure to take the R5 train and buy tickets at the vending machine from the Plaza Espanya rail station (beware of pickpockets at this station). When we went, the line to see the Black Madonna was out the door, but they let people in in waves, so if the line looks super long, I would recommend still waiting! It'll be worth it. The choir performances when went were at 1:00pm. Make sure to get there earlier to get a spot, or you'll be sitting on the cold floor. Note: Visited in Jan 2020 but catching up on reviews because- COVID.
1h from Barcelona by train or car. You can also hike on the top for few hours. Entrance is free for the church but not for the train up to the top. You will enjoy the view and the fresh air, especially during summer.
